Fridays Rock

Reasons I love Fridays:

1) I can sleep as late as I want

2) When I finally get up, I can put on jeans and a comfy shirt

3) I can sit and spin and watch as many episodes of Doctor Who on Netflix as I want

BIG bobbin of singles, nearly done

4) I have time to bake a cake


This is a lemon blueberry bundt cake and it was very well received. We had M's BF and his patents over to talk about some joint college visits and then M had a friend spend the night. By lunchtime today, there was not a crumb left.

5) One out of every four Fridays is massage day (thanks Monique!)

6) If there is great basketball on, I can stay up as long as I like

Now it's Saturday and I have shopped for groceries, put together a crockpot meal, and started on some laundry. Now I have a date with my spinning wheel and the Big 10 tournament semi-finals. Go Buckeyes!

Fiber Fizzle

Went to a fiber festival in Ann Arbor yesterday. Meh. Not very impressive. They have a similar fiber festival in the same venue every fall that I really like with tons of vendors. This one didn't have even half the number of vendors. I walked around the whole thing THREE times and I was still only there for 30 minutes!

I bought a little fiber so the trip wouldn't be a total loss. I bought 4 oz of Polwarth from River's Edge Fiber Arts in the color way Cornucopia.

The nice lady I bought it from said Polworth is a hybrid breed that is a cross between merino and Lincoln. This photo is from their website because I started spinning last night and I forgot to take a picture first.

I really want this yarn to have long color runs, so I split it up to spin one color at a time.

I'm planning to chain ply it to keep the colors distinct. I really hope I can get it to look like the vision in my head. If it does and I have decent yardage, I'm going to knit a shawlette with it.

I also bought a 4oz braid of BFL from Camelot Dyeworks


I tried to get a little outside my color comfort zone, so it doesn't have any jewel tones. Stand back, I'm getting crazy over here!

Speaking of crazy, I made a crazy quilt square!



All from scraps. I stitched the strips onto a muslin square and then hand-embroidered over the seams. The embroidery was really fun and a learned some new stitches.




I'm going to turn this into a throw pillow for my MIL's birthday. I'm hoping to get a similar one done for my own mom. For hers I cross stitched a little snowflake shape to be the center piece. Her birthday is the 21st, so the clock is ticking!

Whoosh

I had part of a post written about how fast time goes by. Just went back to it and it was nearly 2 weeks ago! Point proved!

Made it through another month - whew! M had a snow day recently, so we did some couch surfing and watched 2 episodes of Freaks and Geeks on Netflix. I had never seen it but she is recently obsessed. It's cute and I can't believe how many future stars were in it. It also perfectly captures the awkward fashions of the early eighties. Pre-Flashdance, pre-Madonna, we were still rocking the poly-blends pretty hard. I had blocked it out, but that show brings it all back.

I have been in a very stitchy mood. I whipped up a cross-stitch for L but I can't show you because I am lame and forgot to take a picture before I mailed it. It came from a really great Etsy shop I discovered - Wee Little Stitches. Gloriously geeky patterns for the uber-nerd. I chose the Buffy the Vampire Slayer for L because that used to be her favorite show.

Of course, M was not going to abide her sister being the only one getting a project, so I had to start another right away. I chose the Harry/Ron/Hermione trio and it stitched up fast!

Have to try to find a square frame I can put it in.

I also made a cute pincushion using a pattern I found on...wait for it...PINTEREST!! Yep, still obsessed.

It really was pretty easy - cutting out the template and the six pie wedges took the longest. You wait to cut the bottom circle until the top is done so you can match them exactly.

The pattern is here if anybody wants to give it a try. I'm going to make my next one fancier with some embroidery. I think I will also stuff it more.

Lest you think I've given up knitting altogether, here is a little peek at a recent FO.




Not a fab photo, the light had gone. I will get a better photo of the whole thing soon. It has hand spun!!

Ok, I will leave you with a random thought: why not have plastic lobster bibs in restaurants that serve chips and salsa? Would make my life easier, and my Tide pen consumption would plummet!
